Nothing disturbs a sailing trip more than persistent doldrums-induced engines. The autopilot dully does its job, while the crew looks forward to the anchorage or harbour more and more every minute. The pleasure of water sports does not end abruptly when the wind stops - but the constant humming is annoying.
The strain caused by the noise from the engine room becomes clear at the latest with the sudden silence after switching off the jockey. But as we all know, you can do something about the roaring noise with sound insulation. An existing lining in the engine compartment can also be replaced with new, more effective materials.
Dimpled foam, composite foam or fleece insulation? Not only are there big differences in the materials, the prices also vary greatly. But is insulation that is three times as expensive also three times as good? We analysed the eleven most popular products in the acoustic laboratory.
